Have You Been Feeling Off Balance Lately?

Maybe even like you are spinning or the world around you is spinning? If you are experiencing these symptoms, you are likely experiencing Vertigo. Vertigo can be a very exhausting condition which can affect numerous aspect of a person's life. Our physical therapists at United Rehab Physical Therapy can significantly decrease or even resolve your symptoms after treatment.

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo):

BPPV can occur when tiny particles clump in your inner ear canals. When this happens, your inner ear has trouble sending signals to the brain regarding head and body movements relative to gravity. This disruption and blockage may leave you feeling unbalanced, causing vertigo. Normally, these signals are what help you keep your balance.

Other reasons Vertigo may occur:

  • Meniere's disease

  • Labyrinthitis

  • Head/neck injury

  • Stroke or tumor

  • Certain medications that cause ear damage

  • Migraine headaches

Our physical therapists at United Rehab Physical Therapy will use tests to determine your cause of vertigo, guiding the treatment. During the test for BPPV, our physical therapist will be examining both eyes for nystagmus. Nystagmus is involuntary rapid eye movements involuntary eye movements occurring from side to side, up and down, or in a circular pattern. Your eye movements will give the physical therapist information about which canal of the inner ear may be affected. If the test is positive for BPPV, the treatment can be implemented to relocate the otoconia to their correct location using the Epley maneuver.
