Can electrical muscle stimulation help you?

Do you have muscular pain that you can’t seem to get rid of? Electrical Muscle Stimulation may be the answer for you! An Electrical Muscle Stimulation machine is a state-of-the-art, portable, and easy to use device.

The battery powered console is attached to multiple wires with adhesive pads on the ends. When the adhesive pads are placed on your skin, on top of the affected muscle, and the device is turned on, electrical current will begin to flow through the wires to the pads placed on your body. The electrical pulses cause your muscles to contract and relax.

At United Rehab Physical Therapy in Ronkonkoma, we use Electrical Muscle Stimulation for therapeutic purposes. We have found success in reducing muscular pain and spasms with use of an EMS device. EMS has also been used to treat the following:

  • Muscle re-education

  • Muscle atrophy

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Pressure sore prevention

Electric Muscle Stimulation can benefit individuals in the following areas:

  1. Rehabilitation: strengthening and building muscle

  2. Training: increasing endurance, power, size

  3. Prevention: warming up before activity

  4. Appearance: toning the muscles

  5. Recovery: decreasing lactic acid and increasing circulation

In Ronkonkoma, we have found EMS specifically beneficial in treating sports injuries. We suggest that athletes place the adhesive pads on larger muscle groups to promote circulation, reset tone, and loosen muscles. This portable device is an optimal tool for those on the go. Treatments can be done in the office, at home, in the car, at work, etc. This treatment is ideal for the traveling athlete.

Our Physical Therapists in Ronkonkoma are often asked if treatments will hurt. Since your muscles are contracting, the session may feel similar to a good workout. Some of our patients have described the feeling as a tingling sensation. However, the strength of the pulses can be controlled to best suit your comfort level.
